Battle of the T5220′s!

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Since CCNY has begun promoting our line of refurbished Fujitsu servers, we thought it ideal to post a comparison between a Sun SPARC Enterprise T5220 server and a Fujitsu SPARC T5220 server. These pictures show the similarities and differences of the lines! Enjoy!

From the front the two look identical, same 2U design, with similar setups:
Fujitsu T5220Sun T5220

The rear:

All in all both are great servers, whichever one you need can be purchased here at http://www.ccny.com/ !

Sun SPARC Enterprise M3000 XSCF firmware upgrade procedure

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

The firmware upgrade process on the Sun M series (M3000, M4000, M5000) is pretty straightforward.
First, we want to make sure the XSCF is on the network and that it can communicate with the server where your firmware resides.
In my case:

XSCF> setnetwork xscf#0-lan#0 -m 255.255.254.0 172.16.2.222
XSCF> setnetwork -c up xscf#0-lan#0
XSCF> setroute -c add -n 172.16.2.0 -m 255.255.254.0 -g 172.16.2.1 xscf#0-lan#0
XSCF> sethostname xscf#0 m3000
XSCF> sethostname -d company.com
XSCF> setnameserver 172.16.2.2
XSCF> applynetwork
The following network settings will be applied:
xscf#0 hostname  :m3000
DNS domain name  :company.com
nameserver       :172.16.2.2

interface        :xscf#0-lan#0
status           :up
IP address       :172.16.2.222
netmask          :255.255.254.0
route            :-n 172.16.2.0 -m 255.255.254.0 -g 172.16.2.1

interface        :xscf#0-lan#1
status           :down
IP address       :
netmask          :
route            :

Continue? [y|n] :y
Please reset the XSCF by rebootxscf to apply the network settings.
Please confirm that the settings have been applied by executing
showhostname, shownetwork, showroute and shownameserver after rebooting
the XSCF.
XSCF> rebootxscf
The XSCF will be reset. Continue? [y|n] :y
XSCF> execute S10ioxoff  --  complete

Once the XSCF is on the nework you can begin the upgrade:

XSCF> getflashimage -l
Existing versions:

Please note that if you are running firmware 1092 you might run into the following error while setting up the network connection:
XSCF> setnetwork xscf#0-lan#0 -m 255.255.254.0 172.16.2.222
An internal error has occurred. Please contact your system administrator.
This can be resolved by configuring DSCP first:

setdscp -i 172.16.2.0 -m 255.255.254.0

SPARC Enterprise systems can be upgraded with either Sun or Fujitsu firmware.
