Association of Services and Computer Dealers International, (ASCDI)

Friday, June 17th, 2011

I first went to a meeting in 2001 in Beaver Creek Colorado. Being new to the association, there was a lot of value in attending just for the networking opportunity. I ment a lot of people that I have been doing business with for years and some people that I should be doing more businesses with.

It has now been over 10 years since that meeting and I have learned a lot about how to makete most out of being involved in a trade association. Computer Connection of CNY, Inc. is a used secondary IT dealer dealing in used Sun Microsystems, IBM, Cisco and HP. Every market is a little different. Since dealing with secondary IT requires me to buy and sell to my competition, it is important for me to know as much as I can about them. Each market comes with different rules and different dealers that position themselves differently in each market. I found that the meeting gave my company a chance to established ourselves in each market and figure out the positioning of the other dealers.

To put myself in the best position, I found it extremely beneficial to get as involved as possible. About two years ago, I took the position of Committee Chair for the Sun Microsystems group and last year I was asked and excepted a position on the Board of Directors. In doing so it gave my company and I the chance to be recognized and having a voice in the organization while getting to know quality people better in the industry.

I strongly encourage people in any industry to get involved in trade associations such as the ASCDI. Information is powerful and putting any company in a postion to get more information about the industry they are in is definitly a good move.
