Expanding Fujitsu Business

Friday, July 29th, 2011

CCNY has been reselling used Sun Microsystems for over 20 years. Over the past 10 years a great deal of effort has been made to build it’s business outside of the Sun offerings. We have built a strong business reselling, HP, Dell, IBM, and Cisco. We have also built CCNY’s “Best of Breed” business. We have built relationships with technology leaders like Fortinet and Aruba Networks. While we have had great success outside of reselling Sun Microsystems equipment, a large portion of our customer base has remained loyal to using Sun Microsystems hardware.

CCNY often turns to our customers to understand where our next move to stay successful in a competitive market should be. What we found is that many of our customers are making a move to Fujitsu. Fujitsu has been making Sun Microsystems hardware for years. Many customers that were not happy working with Sun Microsystems, now Oracle, found that Fujitsu was easier to work with and sold the same quality hardware that they have been happy with for years.

CCNY has is directing a lot of energy and resources in to building this business. We have put in place a full time product manager to manage the business. We are working with several different partners to be able to offer extremely competitive pricing on the hardware and we have established relationships to help us offer 24x7x4 hour response maintenance and support for the Fujitsu hardware.

We are very excited to further expand our product line with Fujitsu enterprise servers. We are confident that we will build this business as we did all the others. I want to thank our customers for helping to build our business to expand and adapt into the future.

CCNY Company Picnic 2011

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

It was a beautiful summer day on July 15, 2011. CCNY hosted its annual company picnic at Trails End Camp Grounds. The food was great! It was catered by Piggy Pats BBQ. There was Can Jam, Volleyball, raffles, the beach, and much more. Let’s meet some of the CCNY gang!

Below (left) is the core of our shipping department John Zangrone (left) and Mike Buffa (middle) they are seen here chatting with our former logistics manager Jeff Jankiewicz. Jeff has recently joined our sales team. Good Luck Jeff!

Above (right) there is a mix of our Sales floor and engineering team. From the engineering team wearing the sunglasses (middle) is our Systems Administrator Ted Neykov and to his left (right) is Lindsey Anderson, our Web Developer. Also seen in this picture from Sales is Matt Skinner (left)

It was a great day to close up shop a little early and get out to enjoy the day with some co workers! Below are a few more shots of the events that went on that day;

Computer Hardware Recycling

Computer Equipment Recycling

Discarded electronics equipment is becoming one of the fastest growing components of landfills and are are causing environmental issues by introducing heavy metals and toxins into the environment.

NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act was signed into law on May 28, 2010 . This law is to ensure that all residents in New York State will have the opportunity to recycle their electronic waste in an environmentally friendly manner.

Here are some details on the law:
Beginning April 2, 2011, manufacturers (OEM’s) are obligated to accept equipment back for recycling purposes. This list of equipment includes but is not limited to:
Computers;
Small Scale Servers ;
Computer Peripherals;
Printers;
Fax Machines;
Copiers;
Televisions;
Cell phones;
etc

This program allows for free recycling for New York State Individuals;
For Profit Entities (49 or less employees); Non Profit Entities (79 or less employees); and
Any Public Corporation, School, District or Governmental Agency

My main concern is what will the OEM’s do with the old equipment? Hopefully they will refurbish and recycle everything possible and send it back out to customers who are looking for refurbished and re-manufactured equipment. However I do not believe that the OEM’s will want the market flooded with secondary market gear. That scenario will lower sales on new equipment they are trying to get into circulation. Since this program is going to cost the OEMs an estimated $200 million annually to comply, they can not afford to have the sales of their new equipment drop.

The OEM’s are authorized to tweak the program to a certain extent. They can request a lot of personal information before they agree to take anything back. Can they refuse the recycling option? Is this their goal? The less they take back, the less it will cost them in the long run.

There is also the question of data destruction? The current law states that the manufacturer has no responsibility or liability for data left on the equipment. So what happens to data left on old equipment?

In the long run, I feel that this is an expense the OEM’s will try to skirt out of at every possible chance. So consumers will still be confused as to proper recycling processes.

My advice to consumers is to find an asset management company to help you recirculate your inventory wisely. The Asset Management company may purchase your old equipment and recycle accordingly. Every possible component of the item will be reused and kept out of land fills. The Asset Management company will also wipe data clean, inventory your items and sell as secondary market appliances.

Sun SPARC Enterprise M3000 XSCF firmware upgrade procedure

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

The firmware upgrade process on the Sun M series (M3000, M4000, M5000) is pretty straightforward.
First, we want to make sure the XSCF is on the network and that it can communicate with the server where your firmware resides.
In my case:

XSCF> setnetwork xscf#0-lan#0 -m 255.255.254.0 172.16.2.222
XSCF> setnetwork -c up xscf#0-lan#0
XSCF> setroute -c add -n 172.16.2.0 -m 255.255.254.0 -g 172.16.2.1 xscf#0-lan#0
XSCF> sethostname xscf#0 m3000
XSCF> sethostname -d company.com
XSCF> setnameserver 172.16.2.2
XSCF> applynetwork
The following network settings will be applied:
xscf#0 hostname  :m3000
DNS domain name  :company.com
nameserver       :172.16.2.2

interface        :xscf#0-lan#0
status           :up
IP address       :172.16.2.222
netmask          :255.255.254.0
route            :-n 172.16.2.0 -m 255.255.254.0 -g 172.16.2.1

interface        :xscf#0-lan#1
status           :down
IP address       :
netmask          :
route            :

Continue? [y|n] :y
Please reset the XSCF by rebootxscf to apply the network settings.
Please confirm that the settings have been applied by executing
showhostname, shownetwork, showroute and shownameserver after rebooting
the XSCF.
XSCF> rebootxscf
The XSCF will be reset. Continue? [y|n] :y
XSCF> execute S10ioxoff  --  complete

Once the XSCF is on the nework you can begin the upgrade:

XSCF> getflashimage -l
