e-Waste Still Exists

December 13th, 2011

Electronic waste, or e-waste as it’s commonly referred to, simply means any discarded electronic items.  A few years ago, e-ewaste was a hot topic in the US; how much we produce, what we should do with it, and where it ends up was the focus of many news stories and viral videos  from organizations including Greenpeace, Asia Society, BBC, CNN, and many others.   Videos of Nigerian and Sudanese smelt farms covered the news and online digests alike.

As time passed, as with all trends, the topic of e-waste fell off the radar.  Unfortunately, for these countries and the rest of the world, the practice of exporting large amounts of e-waste from the United States has not gone away.  These countries still contain massive landfills, filled with nothing but electronic waste; everything from CRT monitors,  (which thankfully is one of the few illegal items to export due to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976) to heaping piles of circuit green board.  The conditions for the people in these countries has still not changed.  Entire families still work in hazardous and life threatening conditions, over boiling pots of assorted chemicals, using soldering irons for hours at a time with no protection.

How are these items getting into these countries in the first place?  The most recent media coverage of e-waste in countries like Nigeria has scared large corporations out of directly exporting waste.  The new way of handling e-waste is to hire and outside “e-waste disposal” company to “recycle” these items.  From there the items are exported, sometimes even illegally, to the same countries they were headed to before; except with an extra royalty paid to the middleman.

We’re trying to prevent this from happening.  By breaking electronic waste down into their simplest forms and using local smelters and refiners, we leave little to no left over material from our recycling process, ridding the need to ship waste overseas entirely.  With this new venture, we’re hoping to influence large corporations to deal with their electronic waste in a responsible manner – by holding them responsible for where their “recyclers” send e-waste.

If you’d like more information on what or how we do it, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-566-4786.  More information can be found online at our new recycling site.

Supporting our community is one of the pillars that CCNY has been formed on. That’s why in years past we have given donations to organizations such as the Utica Zoo, Utica Brew-Fest, Wine in the Wilderness, and most recently the Utica Pioneers Hockey team.

On Friday, 21 October CCNY made a company wide trip to watch the Utica College Pioneers take on the Royal Military College of Canada at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Ongoing tests with the Cisco 3G60 engine supported broadband processing connections at speeds a well up to a 1.5 Gbps are underway. The company Cisco has announced it today that it is in collaboration with the Virgin Media group to enhance further the network of the company by the use of deploying DOCSIS’s network infrastructure which already exists. In a test-run which occurred in East London, the company Virgin Media succeeded in achieving a ground-breaking broadband speed to well up to 1.6 GB by the use of the 3g60 Broadband Processing Engine by Cisco, which is a cost-effective and high-density line card which is used for the company Cisco’s premier uBR10k UBR (Universal Broadband Router) and CMTS (Cable Model Termination System).

The high-lights include the fact that a significant component of the complete DOCSIS (R) 3.0 by Cisco solution, the very scalable line-card (3g60) ables the operators of cable television so that they can offer video services of IP. The Cisco UBR (Universal Broadband Router) along with the line-card 3g60 support the complete set of the DOCSIS 3.0 with all its features on scale, which include the IPv6, along with support for more advanced features like sharing of dynamic bandwidth. Also with using the line-card 3g60, one Cisco UBR is able to support as much as 676 channels which are downstream and 480 channels which are upstream per chassis. This is of course the most density and capacity for CMTS in the entire industry.

The VP and the general manager of the Cable Access Business Unit (CABU) of Cisco said that Cisco’s solutions provided by its CMTS by design support large-scale video services and IP broadband services today, along with the impending switch to IP network which is set to occur in the not-so-distant future. He said that Cisco was proud in its helping of Virgin Media to achieve such groundbreaking milestones with the company’s broadband connecting speeds and network capacity.

The Virgin Media group is the pioneering provider encompassing all 4 broadband, mobile phones, television and phone at homes services when it comes to the United Kingdom. The company is known for its mega-fast broadband connection covering around 50 percent of all the homes in the United Kingdom, with speeds reaching upto a 100 megabytes in connection, and is now in expansion of their cable network, the consequences of an investment in multiple billions of pounds, so that the company is able to connection thousands of more individuals across the United Kingdom. The company has come up with the single most advanced television service which is interactive, and has consequently brought together broadcasted television, the best of the offerings of the internet and thousands upon thousands of hours of the most demanded television programming all in a one top-setted box which is powered by the technology called TiVo.

Virgin Media operates also the single most popular mobile network inside the United Kingdom which is virtual and which was, when launched, the whole world’s pioneering such kind of a cellphone service.
Cisco Systems is the global leader when it comes to creating networking which transforms the way people connect, collaborate and communicate with each other.
